The demand for eye care in developing nations is tremendous. Lions In Sight realized that clinic missions, alone, would not be able to provide eye care to every needy person who sought it. Hence, LIS explored the possibility of continuous, local, no cost or low cost care for the needy in developing nations.
In 1996 Lions In Sight established the first five permanent clinics in Peru. Subsequently four permanent clinics were established in Sri Lanka, 37 in Mexico and three in Dominican Republic.
The 37 permanent clinics in Mexico have been extremely successful as proven by their seven-year history. In this period of time over 250,000 patients have been examined by optometrists, with glasses dispensed to almost everyone! The three clinics in Dominican Republic are also establishing a record of success. Additional permanent clinics are planned for Brazil and Costa Rica in the very near future.
